As we head into the Halloween season, Resident Evil: Extinction jumped out of the gates first and grabbed a nice opening weekend haul of $23,678,580. That was good enough for the top spot on the box office charts.
How did this opening weekend compare to those of the first two films? Pretty darn well. The franchise still shows strong vital signs as it easily outdid the original's $17,707,106 total and narrowly overtook Resident Evil: Apocalypse and it's $23,036,273 opening weekend. If Extinction trends similarly to Apocalypse, it should end up with around the same final tally of around $51 million.
Rounding out the top 5 films for this weekend were Good Luck Chuck, The Brave One, 3:10 to Yuma, & Eastern Promises respectively. Rob Zombie's Halloween remake dropped out of the top 10 to #12 and has raked in about $57 million so far.
